I am delighted to say that I will be in attendance for tomorrow night’s fantastic boxing card in Belfast.
Starting with the under card there is some real competitive action in store. Lee Selby defends his British & Commonwealth titles against the very talented Martin Lindsay. This promises to be a real fire cracker of a fight between these two very talented young British featherweights.
Callum Smith is also back in the ring. It will be interesting to see how the super middleweight from Liverpool has progressed with such big talk surrounding him at the moment. From what I know he has sparred in the past extensively with the likes of Carl Froch. For a man of his young age and experience to do that obviously shows how serious he takes the sport.
Former Prize Fighter middle weight champion Eamon O’Kane also returns. Since winning Prize Fighter he hasn’t been on the best of runs but this huge stage will provide a big platform for him to turn things around.
In the fight before the main event Andy Lee returns to action against the always tough Anthony Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is meant to be in great condition coming into the fight and really up for it. Lee will be looking to impress working under new trainer Adam Booth since the passing of his legendary mentor Emanuel Steward last year. I’ve always been a massive fan of Andy Lee and will be eager to see what Booth has added to his game. Perhaps the best attribute Adam Booth provides his fighters is being able to come up with superb game plans. I think this is what Andy Lee needs as he likes to get dragged into a brawl sometimes which worked against him in his title fight against Chavez Jr (a fight he was winning on the scorecards until he got dragged into a toe to toe battle and got stopped).
In the main event of the evening Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton challenges Kiko Martinez for the European Super Bantamweight Title. This has all the makings of an explosive encounter with the two fighters being very capable punchers to put it mildly. I think the patience and intelligence of Frampton will give him the edge though and I can see him stopping Kikio somewhere along the way. As long as the fight lasts it should be very entertaining.
