Another weekend of boxing is upon us and the pick of the action for me has to be in the light welterweight division when the big hitting Argentinian Lucas Matthysse squares off against the always tough Lamont Peterson at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Going into Lamont Peterson vs Lucas Matthysse, both men are in good form, with Peterson coming off an impressive stoppage victory a few months back against Kendall Holt. Prior to that Peterson had been out of the ring for over a year on a ban for having failed a drug test, so considering that, his performance against Holt was quiet impressive. Matthysse on the other hand has been in the form of his life in recent times, coming off five very impressive knockout wins in his last five outings. He has really developed a reputation as a big puncher and it will be interesting to see can Peterson handle his power.
In terms of styles Peterson often likes to make a fight a rough and tough encounter on the inside with lots of clinching at times. Peterson will also go into the fight with a height and slight reach advantage which could pose problems for Matthysse. Both men have an incredible work rate which is what could make this fight very pleasing on the eye for fans. Matthysse has the fun fan friendly knockout style and no doubt will be looking to land his bombs on Peterson early on who sometimes can be a slow starter.
When you look at the caliber of opposition both men have fought, you’d have to give a considerable edge to Peterson in this department. He has been consistently been in with world class operators over the last few years, and this for me coupled with his experience could be enough for him to get a unanimous points victory in this one. A razor close fight though, don’t be surprised if it’s controversial, and even if Matthysse get’s the short end of the stick again like he did in most people’s opinions against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the past.
One thing’s for sure, expect fireworks!
