Kid Galahad Wins European Title
In the main attraction on Channel 5 Kid Galahad 16-0(8) dominated Sergio Prado 9-4-1(3) to claim the vacant European Super Bantamweight title with a unanimous decision win.
Prado pulled out an unexpected card in the early going as he took to the back foot voluntarily, looking to counter-punch, which was against the general consensus of what people expected from the Spanish fighter. Galahad however wasn’t fazed as he fizzed in quick combinations to dominate the early proceedings against his overmatched foe.
As the rounds wore on so did Prado’s chances of victory, outside of the occasional right hand, Prado was offering very little in offence. Frustration was clear as he continued to complain as he lowered his head on numerous occasions, attempting to avoid the quick hands of Galahad.
While a stoppage win would have been well deserved for Galahad, a shutout victory was good enough as he became the new European Super Bantamweight champion. Scorecards were 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108 – the first two scorecards were no doubt very kind on Prado who did nowhere near enough to even share a stanza over the 12 rounds.
On the undercard was the other two quarter-finals in the Maxi Nutrition Knockout tournament. For the vacant English Light Heavyweight title, Travis Dickinson 16-1(6) produced a spectacular performance to stop the more experienced Danny McIntosh 14-6(7) in the 3rd round of a thoroughly exciting encounter.
In the opener, Dickinson got off to a bright start behind the jab, before clubbing in a right hand that sent McIntosh down. Dickinson seemed to sting McIntosh later in the round during an exchange which also saw the danger that Danny brings when the fireworks are flying.
Dickinson found the right early in the 2nd round, before McIntosh repaid in kind. The fight was clearly just warming up. Another big right forced McIntosh to hold as an early knockout was beginning to look very likely in this 10 rounder. Dickinson himself was rocked again later in a tremendous 2nd round that saw both carry on fighting after the bell.
McIntosh walked onto a thunderous right early in the 3rd before he was sent sprawling to the canvas once again as McIntosh foolishly ploughed in with his head low. McIntosh hauled himself up on wobbly legs, forcing the referee to halt the contest.
In the final quarter-final Lee Duncan 5-9-3 lost to Matty Clarkson 12-1(3) on points after 10 rounds for the latter’s Central Area Light Heavyweight title.
Channel 5 joined the contest in the 8th round, after a tough to score and tough to watch opening 7 rounds. Duncan was frustrating Clarkson with his awkward style and veteran like tactics to make Clarkson miss. Duncan was clearly looking to make Clarkson’s work seem messy, hoping that the judges would sway against that sloppy but more aggressive work.
In the 9th, Clarkson began to find a rhythm, which also forced Duncan to fight back eventually bringing the crowd into the fight.
After some wise words from his corner, Duncan came out swinging in the final round, but it was too late, even though he shook Clarkson in the final minute. Both were terribly tired as the bell sounded to end the fight.
Clarkson took the victory, 97-94.
