Another weekend of vintage fight action is here fight fans and as always, I’m going to offer my pics on how I think things might play out. This weekend the squared circle provides some quality pro action that might be of interest both State side and in the UK:
Bermane Stiverne vs Chris Arreola (Vacant WBC Heavyweight title)
Starting off in the US. This one see’s a much anticipated rematch but this time round is for the vacant WBC heavyweight title, courtesy of Vitali Klitschko’s political career. Arreola vows to become the first man of Mexican descent to become heavyweight champion but I just think Stiverne’s boxing skills might prove a little too much again for him. I can see it been a very close fight but if I were to pick someone I’d have to go with Stiverne, more than likely on points.
Kid Galahad vs Fred Mundraby
Sheffield’s super bantamweight sensation Kid Galahad is back in action this weekend in what I expect to be an impressive performance from him. The reigning European champ will also fight for the vacant Commonwealth title when he takes on solid Aussie Fred Mundraby (15-1-1, 7KOs). On paper he seems like a credible opponent but has been stopped once before.
He may give Galahad a few problems early on but I’d be looking for the champion to put on a bit of a show and win in style, now that he know’s he is really starting to knock on the door for a world title shot. If he has any aspirations to fight the likes of Rigo, Santa Cruz, Martinez, Frampton or Quigg in the next 12 months he needs to look good tomorrow. I think he will.
Derry Matthews vs Martin Gethin
The always exciting Liverpool lightweight returns to action tomorrow and will be boxing in front of a home crowd at the Olympia. He fights for the vacant British title against a very tough Walsall contender in Martin Gethin.
Both men are not in great form coming into this one coming off losses but I’d expect Matthews been the type of fighter he is will come out all guns blazing, been on home turf.
This one could go either way but I’m going to go with a Derry win inside the distance in what could be a real barn stormer of an encounter!
