Kimbo Slice vs Alexander Ustinov – By Niall Doran
STEPPING UP
Every now and then in boxing you come across a story that puts a smile on your face, a real spectacle. This one this morning certainly did that for me as I have to admit, I’ve always been a fan of watching Kimbo Slice, going back a few years to those street fight YouTube sensations that he was so famous for. Granted he’s had a mediocre stint in mma and now finds himself as an aging heavyweight pro boxer but you’ve got to admire the man’s bravery for stepping into the ring with a legitimate heavyweight in Alexander Ustinov.
WHEN & WHERE?
It was announced yesterday that Kimbo Slice (7-0, 6KO) vs Alexander Ustinov (29-1, 21KO) will take place on a December 11th on a card in Moscow Russia as part of a big night of boxing that will be headlined by a WBA interim super middleweight title fight between Fedor Chudinov (11-0, 9 KO) and Ben McCullough (14-0, 11 KO).
BOXING STORY SO FAR
Kimbo (real name Kevin Ferguson) has got off to a good start as a pro boxer but it has to be said he hasn’t exactly mixed with decent opposition, to be fair. Whereas Ustinov has fought some top heavyweight contenders in recent years and is coming off the back of a win against David Tua. This coupled with the fact Slice is now 40 years old and will be taking on Ustinov in his birthplace in Russia (although he is now from Belarus) all contribute to making this a tough assignment for the street fighting legend.
MOTIVATIONS AND BRAVERY
One would have to think he’s been offered substantial money to travel across the globe for such a demanding task. Ustinov’s sole defeat did come by stoppage to Kubrat Pulev, so perhaps Slice will be thinking to himself he might be able to get him out of there early if he lands one of those big bombs. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds. This writer for one will be wishing Mr Slice nothing but the best in this ballsy move!
