THE MAYWEATHER PACQUIAO SAGA – CONTINUED FRUSTRATION
I’m one of those boxing fans who surf the World Wide Web looking for everything that involves the fight between undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. I’m one of those boxing bloggers who tried to write about the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, that has been muted time and time again.
But lately I’m fed up with the fight negotiation’s progress. I’m following the progress until this fight materializes. I just feel bad about it. A fight that was supposed to happen because boxing fans around the world wanted to see it, still isn’t a reality. It is the fight that will break all records in terms of revenue. From gate sales, to pay-per-view, to advertiser’s and everybody involved in the business. The month of January is about to end. But still there’s no announcement, I’ve began to feel disappointed.
A lot of writers covering the sport of boxing write boxing stories such as this lately, just to keep track their web traffic up. But all stories are just giving false hope about this fight in my opinion. The people involved are just joking around boxing fans which patronizes boxing. I just can’t fathom why the two best welterweights in our time would not agree to fight, it is their profession, it is their bread and butter! They are talking about high risk low rewards. For what? For that “O” in one of their records? In fact, it is highest rewards not relating just to money but also their legacy.
LEGACY
Win or lose we as a boxing fans can finally end this long standing chapter if they fight. Did it matter who won and who lost in “Thrilla in Manila”? Both Fraser and Ali were winners in that classic battle. It happened many years ago but we are talking about it. The next generation of boxing fans will keep talking about it for years and years to come. It’s because those who actually saw it will tell the great story to the next generation. These young generations of boxing fans will dig deep down into Google searches and find footage of the classic fight. Not the fighters. It’s the fight that’s really important in the long run.
But I don’t know if Floyd Mayweather or Many Pacquiao realize this. Perhaps Pacquiao, yes. But for Floyd… He does not seem to understand LEGACY. Somebody please tell him about the word. I’m not insulting Mayweather here. I’m a big fan of his. I admire his boxing skills. I respect him as a man.
I will be fairly sad if I never get to see this fight. This is the fight of my generation. I’m envious of my grandfather who was able to watch the many big fights of his generation. I feel jealous with my uncle who’s also a boxing fan who saw many great fights. I’m around the same age as Pacquiao and Mayweather, but I feel unlucky, unlucky if I will not be able to see the fight of my generation. As a boxing fan I want to explode right now! I almost feel like pulling the heads of Mayweather and Pacquiao together and hold their respective right thumbs and soak it in a black ink and mark a contract that has only these words: “We agree to fight on May 2, 2015 anywhere”.
(Fictional contract where both fighter’s should have to give their finger prints at this stage!)
WHAT HAPPENED TO WANTING TO BE THE BEST?
You (Mayweather and Pacquiao) guys are professional fighters. You should fight. The boxing fans deserve it. They deserve it even if your not in your prime anymore. But it’s not too late. Don’t wait until it’s too late, you owe it to the fans.
The words of Bob Raissman of NY Daily News: “Those doing the business of boxing are consumed with winning the negotiation, screwing the other guy at all costs. The battle to negotiate a mega fight is bloodier than what happens inside the ring.”
I know too many people have a lot of stakes in this potential event. Agree to fight in one place and people will come to see, networks will come to televise, fans will find where to buy the tickets, etc. Well, I know it’s easier said than done. I know it doesn’t work this way. I’m just desperate I guess at this stage like every other boxing fan to see this fight happen.
Whatever, if you will not fight it’s not our loss. It’s your loss (both fighters) ultimately. Both of you will be remembered as the best of your era, but not fighting the best. I beg the question, how can you really be called the best? If you guys don’t come to an agreement to fight, I urge you to retire!
Give other fighters the chance to be called the best.
