KELL BROOK KNOCKS OUT JO JO DAN – POST FIGHT ANALYSIS

By Peter Wells

It was a long time coming, but Kell Brook’s homecoming was worth the wait for all his fans in Sheffield. They were treated to a fine performance from Brook who stopped mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan 34-3 (18 KO) after 4 rounds.

In August last year, Kell 34-0 (23 KO) was on top of the world when he beat Shawn Porter for the IBF Welterweight title via majority decision. But his hardest battle came just a month later when Kell was stabbed in the leg with a machete in Tenerife. It was a near death experience that has given Brook that little more incentive to return to the ring, return to where he belongs, where he has not lost in 34 professional contests.

Dan was never in the same league as Brook who dominated from the opening bell until the Romanian-Canadian’s corner pulled their fighter out after 4 knockdowns in 4 rounds.

Brook sent Dan to the canvas in the 2nd, and the visitor never recovered as the Motorpoint Arena crowd was expectant of an early victory in Kell’s first world title defence.

Dan was down again in the same round, but managed to see out over a minute of the stanza. And he would stand up well in the 3rd as Brook patiently looked for the finish, not in any rush to close the curtain on his homecoming.

But the 4th saw Dan hit the canvas twice more, and this time there would be no more punishment for the challenger as his corner and the fighter himself decided it was best for him to fight another day.

Brook will be looking at a big fight in the UK in the summer, with many names including Juan Manuel Marquez, Brandon Rios and of course Amir Khan being muted.

On the undercard, Adam Etches 18-1(15) was stunned by dark-horse Sergey Khomitsky who stopped the Sheffield prospect with a single right cross.

Khomitsky 30-11-3(13) offered the same fate to Frank Buglioni last year and he repeated the trick against a fighter that already had big ambitions following recent knockout performances. But this time after a good start he was caught cold by a right hand in the 4th round and it was instantly stopped by referee Howard Foster.
