It was a dominant shut out from start to finish in truth, that saw the ultra skilled Lara progress his record to 21-2-2 (12 KO).
Going into the fight, not many expected it to be a competitive fight to be fair, but Lara nonetheless went about his work in a professional manner.
He dictated the pace of the fight with his superior boxing skills from that tricky southpaw stance he uses, a real master of range and distance.
His counters were unavoidable for the outmatched Rodriguez, who hit the canvas in the sixth round from a thudding Lara straight left hand that exploded squarely on his nose, putting him onto the seat of his trunks.
It looked as though there may have been another knockdown scored in the 11th for Lara, but replays showed that it was an accidental slip by Rodriguez.
Lara does a lot of the fundamentals really well, and it was just too much for Rodriguez, who couldn’t lay a glove on him.
Lara’s stiff right hand jab landed flush on a number of occasions throughout the contest and the old faithful one-two proved a fruitful go to weapon for the champion. His straight left hand’s accuracy was superb at times.
From a spectacle standpoint, there wasn’t much to be applauded in terms of action to be honest. For technical boxing purists however, there was certainly some excellent skills on display at times from Lara.
This was not to please the crowd in attendance though, who were not too happy and their boos could be heard a number of times.
All three scorecards read 120-107 in favour of the champion Erislandy Lara, who no doubt will look to secure some bigger fights on Spike TV later this year off the back of this shut out points win.
