3 Fights That Could Be Next For Ward, Porter and Lemieux

Following on from last weekend’s wins for Andre Ward, Shawn Porter and David Lemieux, here’s three tasty contests that might be on the cards next.

________________________________________________________________________________

Shawn Porter vs Keith Thurman

Fighting in July may not completely drop “One Time” Thurman from the Floyd Mayweather sweepstakes, but should Floyd announce his September 12th opponent before July 11th then it is less likely that the 25-0(21KO’s) record fighter will be in with the pound-for-pound king.

But a fight that does make sense for Thurman is with former IBF Welterweight champion Shawn Porter. It makes far more sense than fighting the talented young fighter Errol Spence, who would benefit far more from fighting the likes of Robert Guerrero.

Porter and Thurman were seemingly nearing a collision course between unbeaten fighters before Porter lost his title at the hands of Kell Brook, but Porter has returned strong and surprised Adrien Broner at the weekend despite giving up advantages in the weight department.

Both are good fighters, Porter better on the inside while Thurman does his best work from further out, so a clash of styles makes for both an exciting and hard to predict contest.

Andre Ward vs James Degale

Ward showed on Saturday night that he needs no more tune-up fights and should be ready to face the best in the Super Middleweight division.

With Froch undecided on his future and Gennady Golovkin’s options elsewhere in the Middleweight division, the options seem a little thin. Badou Jack and George Groves are set to clash as are Robert Stieglitz and Arthur Abraham, so it seems a fight with IBF champion Degale is the last option unless he steps up to Light Heavyweight.

It would be a quality unification clash between a fighter still at the top of his game and another who is hoping to make himself into a world force. A chance for Ward to end the year as the WBA ‘Super’ & IBF Super Middleweight titleholder heading into a big 2016 that could include fights with Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev and others.

David Lemieux vs Gennady Golovkin

Lemieux showed his outstanding power on Saturday in a fight of the year candidate with Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam. But in between those knockdowns N’Dam made things extremely difficult for the Canadian puncher, much in the same way the Cameroon fighter did to Peter Quillin who dropped N’Dam 6 times.

Lemieux scored 4 knockdowns and took some good shots himself, but it was the aggression he showed that has people licking their lips ahead of a potential fight with GGG. Golden Boy Promotions will be willing to work with HBO and Tom Loeffler ahead of a September/October match-up which could prove similar to the Saul Alvarez-James Kirkland war that took place earlier this year.

It will be a great chance to see Golovkin’s chin seriously checked as Lemieux will look to prove he is the biggest puncher in the 160lbs division.
