IBF world super-bantamweight champion Carl Frampton is ready to put the American boxing public on notice with his US debut against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr at the weekend in El Paso, Texas.

The Jackal Hits The USA

Carl Frampton (20-0, 14KO) from the Tiger’s Bay area of Belfast, takes on tough Mexican challenger Alejandro Gonzalez Jr (25-1-2-15KO) this Saturday.

Frampton’s respect for his opponent is evident in the build up thus far, but the Belfast man has mentioned that he believes there will be different “levels” between him and Gonzalez Jr.

It’s hard not to agree with this assessment, especially when you take into account the caliber of the challengers Gonzalez’s last 3 opponents in the ring have been – Alem Robles, Gonzalo Garcia and Javier Franco. All were good fighters, but not in the same class as the champion, not even remotely.

Clearly Gonzalez Jr will have to find another level (or three) if he is to have any hope of sinking the champion from the titanic city.

As you would expect, Frampton is confident of making a comprehensive defence of his title and is excited at the prospect of showcasing his talents to a wider audience on the other side of the Atlantic.

Frampton has an easy to watch, stylish manner in the ring too, it has to be said. He is entertaining and intelligent and is a dangerous puncher with both hands. You’d think that this should translate nicely to the American audience, who love action fighters.

The stage is now set and a classy victory would set up the prospect of a future bout in Ireland or the UK against WBA champ Scott Quigg, or even against WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz in America (should he get past Abner Mares).

A bout against the highly talented WBA Super World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux is a mouthwatering fight also, and it could happen in Ireland or America one would think, if “The Jackal” wins on Saturday.

But first thing’s first, Alejandro Gonzalez Jr is the gateway to Frampton’s potential Stateside stardom. Strap yourself in, for what could be the start of one hell of an American boxing ride for Carl Frampton.
