Middleweight prospect Liam Desmond looking to extend winning run in October
Essex middleweight prospect, Liam Desmond (5-0) next fights on October 17th at Grays Civic Hall in Essex on a Carl Greaves Promotions show.

“Just received the news that I’ll be out again in October and I can’t wait,” said Desmond. “I’m back in the gym now, started last week but just been ticking over three times a week since my last fight. The full training camp will start properly in August.”
It’ll be Desmond’s second six-rounder following his latest win over the heavily experienced, Chris Jenkinson (8-21-2) on June 20th at the same venue.
“This one will be a six rounder again, nothing confirmed on opponents yet,” commented Desmond. “That last fight was good for me, it was a tough fight and I done well against him. I don’t want to jump up too quickly so I’ll hopefully get someone around the same sort of standard again.”
The 22-year-old from Corringham, Essex defeated the two-time Masters champion 59-55 on points in his first step up in class and rounds.
“I thought I had won every round, to be honest, but I’m pleased with my performance in there and happy to get another win,” he reported.
The triumph over Jenkinson moved the prospect up to five wins in five bringing the opportunity to challenge for titles closer than ever.
Desmond shared his ambitions, “Obviously, I want titles, that’s the plan but I think they have done away with the Masters titles and I’m a bit too far away to be going for the Southern Area right now.”
The British Boxing Board of Control banned the Masters titles earlier this year which has divided opinions in the boxing world.
“I’ll just take it as it comes, I’m in no rush,” he continued on the subject of silverware. “I’ve seen others step up too quickly and get greedy for titles and end up losing so I’m happy to be patient for now.”
Known as ‘The Hammer’, he completed his introduction into the paid ranks successfully with victories over Liam Griffiths (3-37-1) on his debut in March last year, Dee Mitchell (9-63-1) four months later in July, Kieran Gray (6-35-1) another four months apart in November, and a fine win over an unbeaten Rob Brown (1-0) in March this year concluded his debut year as a pro.
After five fights unbeaten, the 6ft tall athlete has settled in comfortably following a decade of amateur boxing, winning 46 of 59 fights and collecting a Haringey Box Cup gold and silver medal, as well as a Swedish Box Cup silver medal.
He now claims to begin seeing the benefits of all of the hard work as his reputation starts to climb, “I think I’ve set my name out there now and I got a lot of good feedback recently.
“You’ve got to really start at the bottom and work your way up in this game. You start off like you’re a needle in a haystack! A lot of people are coming up to me and saying that they’ll definitely be at the next fight so I’ve definitely got more support now.”
Teammates Darrel Church (2-1), Paul Hilz (1-1), Joe Jackson Brown (2-0) George Hennon (1-0) and Shaun Hussein (1-0-2) will all be appearing on the same bill.
The main event sees Southern Area champ, Adam Dingsdale (13-2-1) go up against Kevin Hooper (17-3) for the vacant English lightweight title.
Both boxers come into the fight following back-to-back wins and this will be Hooper’s third crack at the English title after losing out on the super-featherweight version twice back in 2013.
