Boxing NAV’s Cathal Jennings caught up with Anthony Joshua’s next opponent Gary Cornish. The undefeated heavyweight was in confident mood after the fight’s announcement.

Opportunity comes knocking

Anthony Joshua faces Gary Cornish for the vacant Commonwealth title. Both men are undefeated and for both it is the first chance at a major title. It clearly means a lot to Cornish:

”It means a lot to mean when any boxer starts out boxing they dream of fighting for titles, so to fight for this title is amazing.”

Cornish doesn’t seem over awed by his opponents KO record and says he’s done what is expected of him:

”He has beat what has been in front of him like I have we will have to wait and see.”

Exciting clash of undefeated heavyweights

This fight is the biggest test yet for Joshua and with a fight against long time rival Dillian Whyte on the horizon, he won’t want to mess up. However Cornish is full of confidence going into the fight:

”I am very confident I always train hard and I have a brilliant team around me who I owe a lot to because they give up so much time for me.”

Cornish clearly believes in his ability and won’t be drawn into mind games in the build up to this fight:

”To be honest it doesn’t feel any different from any other fight, I’m not really one to shout my mouth off I respect every boxer getting in the ring with me I just look forward to a good fight.”

One thing both Joshua and Cornish agree on is that it’s not going the distance:

”It should be a cracking fight, totally different challenges for both fighters – I can’t see it going the distance. They can expect me to turn up for a fight and I promise I will give it everything.”

Upsetting the apple cart

Not many people are giving Gary Cornish a chance but that doesn’t bother him:

”That doesn’t bother me everyone is entitled to their opinion. We’ll see.”

Joshua is the clear favourite but, Cornish has never been beaten and has a formidable record of 21-0 (12 KO) so Joshua won’t have it all his own way.

Cornish may not carry the power Joshua does but his experience will count for a lot. This fight could go either way and could be a cagey affair, or alternatively the pair may opt to come out swinging bombs.

Either way, someone’s 0 has got to go.
