James “Lights Out” Toney was once a formidable force in the world of boxing, and is rightly to this day respected as a great of his time. But last night the now 46 year old Toney, made what could be one of his final appearances in the ring.

James Toney took on Charles Ellis last night in St Louis, USA, in a heavyweight contest that some were predicting would be a straight forward win against the less heralded Ellis.
They were wrong.
The 40 year old Ellis who was coming off back to back losses (including a KO defeat) outpointed Toney over 10 rounds, in a less than thrilling encounter.
The final scorecards read: 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 all in favour of the unanimous winner on points – Charles Ellis.
Toney, a tremendous champion is in his day, has now lost twice in a row and has a record now of 76-10-3 (46 KO).
At the age of 46 and clearly passed his best, perhaps this might be the final time anyone sees Toney in a pro boxing ring again.
Whatever his decision is though, he can be very proud of an outstanding overall campaign that saw him win multiple world titles in different weight classes – displaying knockout power and sophisticated defensive skills in bucket fulls.
