Sam Eggington and Frankie Gavin to collide Oct 17

UK Welterweights meet in an intriguing title clash on October 17th.

Sam Eggington and Frankie Gavin will clash in an all-Birmingham Welterweight championship fight on a stacked card at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on October 17, live on Sky Sports.

Eggington will put his British, Commonwealth and WBC International Silver Welterweight titles on the line against Gavin, who goes straight back into championship action following his World title clash with Kell Brook in May.

Stourbridge star Eggington has been on fire in the last year, with impressive wins over Denton Vassell, Shayne Singleton, Joseph Lamptey and Glenn Foot leading to ‘The Savage’ picking up the titles he defends against his city rival.

Gavin is the outright owner of a Lonsdale belt and a former Commonwealth king, but ‘Funtime’ will be eager to regain the titles once again, with the victor set to land bragging rights in the Second City.

There’s a stacked bill in support of the main event, with another huge local derby as former World title challenger Matthew Macklin meets Jason Welborn.

Macklin is moving down to Light Middleweight for the clash with Welborn, a second hometown fight in quick succession for the World-rated 33 year old following his second round KO win in May, and he warms up for the bout with a fight in Spain next weekend.

It’s a golden opportunity for Welborn, the Tividale fighter that is full of confidence having climbed off the canvas to beat Ryan Aston in their meeting for the Midlands Area Light Middleweight crown in June.

Unbeaten Super Flyweight star Kal Yafai faces Jason Cunningham for the vacant British title while his brother Gamal Yafai continues his progression in the paid ranks. The Midlands Area belt is on the line between Middleweights Lennox Clarke and Craig Cunningham while there are also outings for Corry Gibbs, Zack Parker and Dan Breeze.

“To be honest I’m still in shock that this fight and this card has come together like this,” said promoter Eddie Hearn.

“I have to take my hat off to Frankie and Sam. Frankie is straight back in the war zone after his defeat to Kell and Sam is putting all his hard work on the line at only 21.

These are the kind of fights that ignite a city and add the local derby of Macklin vs Welborn plus Kal Yafai vs. Doncaster’s Jason Cunningham for the British strap, Birmingham has a night on Oct 17 to get very excited about.”
