Many thought it would be third time lucky in world title fights this morning for UK super- middleweight George Groves, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Groves’ previous two attempts at world title challenges came against fellow countryman Carl Froch, but Badou Jack ensured that it was to be ‘third time unlucky’ at the MGM in Vegas.
Groves looked like he was settling into the fight nicely in the first round, but towards the very end of the round got caught with hard right hand counters, that dropped him. The Englishman just beat the count before the round ended.
To his credit, Groves came back bravely in the second and was using his boxing skills well to stay out of trouble.
As the fight progressed into the third, fourth and fifth rounds, Groves really looked like he was turning up the heat, throwing fast and hard combinations and outworking Badou Jack over this period.
However, as the midway stage of the fight approached, it looked like Groves had perhaps spent too much energy early on – with less venom on his punches it seemed.
Jack looked to be coming on stronger out of the two in the second half half of the fight and as the defending champion, this probably proved the difference ultimately in getting him the split decision victory on the night.
The final scorecards read: 115-112 Jack, 116-111 Jack and 114-113 Groves.
