Some of Tyson Fury’s comments in a now infamous interview with the Daily Mail might have prompted 130,000 people to sign a petition against him being in the running for the 2015 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, but that will not be stopping him running in the award says the BBC director-general.

BBC director-general Lord Hall has told British politicians that the BBC are committed to free speech and will let the public decide on who wins the prestigious award.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Lord Hall said:
“One of the things which is key to the BBC is we are impartial and we should be a place where people’s views can be heard across a range of opinion in all things. For me this is the fundamental principle. I trust our viewers, listeners, our voters to make sense of what is going on.”
People may have different views and opinions to Fury, which they are very entitled to have of course, but the above statement from Lord Hall is surely a win for free speech and democracy.
No doubt with Fury’s inclusion the awards ceremony will probably get record viewing numbers.
The only boxer in the last 15 years to win the award was Joe Calzaghe, time will tell if the new heavyweight champion of the world can add to that for the sport of professional boxing.
