Offer Tabled For Potential Canelo Alvarez vs Liam Smith Fight

Frank Warren has confirmed that an offer has been made for Liam Smith (22-0-1, 12KO) to possibly fight middleweight WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO).

Speaking in an interview with IFL TV’s Kugan Cassius, Warren said:

“We’re contemplating an offer from Alvarez. We’re looking at that, we’ll think about it and see where we go.”

Liam Smith from Liverpool currently holds the light-middleweight WBO title, with Canelo holding the WBC middleweight strap at present.

With no more details forthcoming just yet, boxing fans will be left to speculate as to what title (WBO or WBC) and at what weight (154lbs or 160lbs) a potential bout is likely to be contested at, should  it go ahead.

The opportunity for Liam Smith to fight arguably one of boxing’s biggest stars would be too big a carrot for the 27 year old from Merseyside to turn down, one would imagine.

That of course isn’t the issue here, the real question at hand is if Canelo would choose to fight a light-middleweight for the full middleweight title at the expense of proven middleweight champions, or challengers who might be perceived as bigger names in America.

But what a fight and potential opportunity for Liam Smith though, if it comes to fruition.
