The old naysayer phrase of “boxing is dead” is ironically the one that seems to be dying out at the moment, as David Haye TV viewing figures from last Saturday further illustrate.

Last weekend former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye made his comeback fight at the O2 Arena in London, all be it against limited opposition in Mark de Mori, but the post-fight viewing numbers that emerged this week are extremely encouraging for not only him, but boxing as a whole.
He inevitably took care of de Mori in brutal fashion inside a round, but the fight was shown on UK and Irish TV via free to air channel Dave, with the ‘eyeballs’ benefits perhaps greater than any skeptic could have imagined going into the fight:
The boxing event on the night remarkably took 14% of the entire UK’s TV audience for the evening, and was rated the top non-public broadcast of the whole day.
Boxing is dead? Not a hope.
During the fight the Haye fight also experienced a higher viewership than long established Channel 4, and was just 1% behind ITV.
Sure, the fight was never really going to be competitive, but the above not only show Haye’s draw power is still alive and well, but that in fact more casual fans of boxing who might not necessarily watch the sport usually are beginning to tune in again.
