Father David Smith will become Australia’s oldest ever professional fighter.

54 year old Father David Smith will return to a boxing ring 20 years after he last fought at the age of 34, in one of the more unusual but inspiring boxing stories coming out of Australia at the moment. He’s hoping to raise money for multiple boxing programs both in Australia and abroad with the comeback.

Speaking this week to ABC News Australia this week, the Anglican parish priest said:

“This is why I got into it in the first place. It’s always just been a way of raising money. It hasn’t resulted in huge numbers coming to church, but it certainly has resulted in a lot of guys getting off heroin and getting their lives together. Boxing seems to really work as a form of therapy.”

Father Smith has had quite the journey in boxing thus far, certainly something you don’t hear about too often.

Speaking to ABC Compass a few years back, the Sydney based local legend had his full, unique tale, charted in this novel documentary (hat tip to Dave Smith for the upload):
