On March 5th, undefeated heavyweight boxer, Dave Jones (5-0) steps up to face Ferenc Zsalek (15-47-6) over six three-minute rounds in the main event at Medway Park in Gillingham on a JE Promotions show titled, ‘Best of the Best’.

The Kent-based boxing event features unbeaten prospects and an exciting young debutant, topped with thrilling heavyweight action on the 10th weekend of the year.
34-year-old headliner from Sheppey has clocked up five wins on the spin in his first 15 months in the paid ranks, kicking off with a points win over Moses Matovu at the York Hall in Bethnal Green in September 2014.
Trained by Ray Askew in his Invicta Gym on the Isle-of-Sheppey, Jones’ sixth career contest will double up as his maiden six-rounder and first time headlining a show. Jones assured:
“I’ll cope with it well. No extra pressure, not at all. At the end of the day, I’m getting out there and fighting and it’s all the same. I was ready to do six rounds for the last fight, I’ve got fitter and fitter with each fight I’ve had. I used to be in the army so was always fit as anything and I’ve just carried that on, I’ve got a fast work rate for a heavyweight.”
Of his 30-year-old Hungarian opponent, who makes his sixth trip to England as the away fighter, the former soldier remarked:
“He’s not a spoiler, I know that he’ll stand there and have a fight with me which is better and more interesting.”
The 6ft 5” tall fighter benefits from top-level sparring with nearby heavyweight Tom Dallas from Chatham. The 30-year-old sparring partner’s previous fight was at Madison Square Garden in April last year against Charles Martin, now the IBF World heavyweight champion who makes the first defence of his title against Anthony Joshua in April:
“I do a lot of sparring with Tom Dallas from Chatham and I went up and sparred with David Allen last week, he’s unbeaten in nine fights and got a British title eliminator coming up.”
The headliner’s previous three bouts have all been fought at Medway Park during 2015, the first of those was kicked off last March with a fine points win over Paul Butlin, a former Midlands Area champion. Jones enthused:
“These shows are doing brilliant for the area,The unlicensed boxing has always been the main thing going on in Kent but the professional boxing is taking off now and it’s all thanks to Joe [Elfidh].”
Jones’ trainer, Ray Askew, is turning out some impressive fighters from his Sheppey-based gym which includes unbeaten middleweight prospect, Oli Edwards (2-0), also on the same bill on March 5th.
The 21-year-old from Sheerness counts Joe Calzaghe as a mentor and the forthcoming bout in March will complete his debut year punching for pay.
Latvian super-middleweight, Edgar Sneidze (4-13) will provide Edwards with his next test in the paid ranks and comes into the contest brimming with confidence off the back of a first-round stoppage win in his native city of Riga last January.
The packed undercard will see Maidstone super-featherweight, Chris Matthews (2-0), 21-years-old, boldly taking on a winning fighter in Hungarian, Gyula Tallosi (10-6) over four-rounds at the 130lbs limit.
Although the 27-year-old travelling opponent from Budapest has won all 10 fights at home – his previous win being a third round stoppage victory in December last year – he is yet to have his hand raised abroad.
Nicknamed ‘Double El’, Elvis Makoda (1-1-2) from Middlesex will be desperate to double his win tally after suffering a shock defeat to Welshman, Rhys Saunders (1-3-1) in his first outing under the JE Promotions banner last November.
The 25-year-old lightweight, originally from Central Africa, is the only fighter on the show yet to have his opponent confirmed.
Whitstable’s James Chiericato (4-1-1) will be looking to put to bed the demons from his sole career loss at the same venue back in 2013, unexpectedly losing on points in what was his second pro bout.
The southpaw regularly fights in London on Hellraiser Promotions shows and will relish the chance to right the wrong at the location placed much closer to home.
Middleweight debutant from Chatham, Charlie Shane, makes his pro bow against 29-year-old opponent, Aaron Robinson travelling from Lincoln.
Shane, a 24-year-old southpaw, has enjoyed a decorated stint in the unlicensed and white collar scene, winning a majority of his 24 competitive fights.
Active professional boxers Dan Woodgate and Haidar Sadik provide the commentary for the Kent-based event.
Newly-formed promotional outfit – JE Promotions – headed by former pro boxer, Joe Elfidh count this as their fifth event at the Medway Park venue and are planning many more shows in the future. Elfidh said:
“It’s good to work with Invicta Gym and Fight Box Gym. I’m planning on putting on more shows on in Kent and got some great sponsors on board now such as Kent Trade Frames and Campbell Nutrition.”
