Recently I caught up with undefeated heavyweight Hughie Fury, who despite his already highly adept boxing skills and respectable record amassed of 18-0-10KO, is still just 21 years old and is set to make a big splash in heavyweight boxing over the next 12 months.

Last week Hughie’s next opponent was announced as Dominican Republic’s Nagy Aguilera (20-9-14KO) where the two will fight later this month on March 26th at the Wembley Arena in London.
Hughie was deep in training camp when I spoke to him recently, and he told me:
“It should be a good fight, should be a good test. I’m looking forward to it.”
The fight will also be for the vacant international WBC heavyweight title which I mentioned to Hughie should help his rankings quite well with them. He agreed and also touched on trouble finding opponents:
“Yeah it should do, it should put me in the top ten in the WBC. We offered a good few people but its very hard to get the fights. There’s not many people taking the fights at the minute. Fair play to Aguilera for taking the fight.”
He added he was also pleased to be part of the exciting heavyweight scene in Britain:
“Some exciting times. There’s a good few up and coming prospects in the game. Its definitely an exciting division.”
In recent years Hughie had been inactive due to an undiagnosed minor medical problem that was causing him to fatigue in training, that led his team, father (and coach) Peter to get him checked out and tested, as it was effecting his ability to keep weight on and train consistently.
In the end the problem turned out to be just a simple allergy, that was cleared up with some dietary and nutrition readjustments. Hughie told me he’s never felt so strong now:
“I feel 100% better now, stronger, more powerful, I can get on with my training now with no problems. Now I’m just rearing to go and looking forward to getting in there and doing the business. I’m eating the right food, on the right track, have the right people behind me, feeling a lot stronger and fitter – feeling good and just can’t wait to show up on the 26th.”
Our conversation then moved to the upcoming Charles Martin vs Anthony Joshua IBF heavyweight title fight taking place next month in April in London’s 02. Hughie said:
“I’ve not really seen much of Charles Martin but its a fifty-fifty fight to be honest with you. It might be a bit too soon for Joshua but I hope he pulls it off. It will be a tough fight for him I think.”
During our phone chat Hughie metioned he was currently based in Holland at the moment, putting in the work out there ahead of March 26th. I wanted to know was Hughie looking to become world champion in the next 12 to 18 months, to which he confidently replied:
“Yeah definitely. Hopefully after this fight we can get some more good names.”
As our international phone conversation drew to an end, Hughie spoke to me of the great pride he took in his cousin Tyson’s achievement of winning the undisputed heavyweight world title last year against Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko, and how he takes inspiration from it:
“Yeah I knew Tyson would get there eventually when he got his chance. I was over the moon for him. This time he’ll beat him (Klitschko) even better in the rematch. I’m just a humble person, I just stay calm and keep doing what I’ve always done – train hard. I know in time it will be my turn and that’s it. I’ve just got to keep waiting, keep training hard and eventually it will be my time.”
