Tim Redigolo of Boxing News & Views was sat ringside for all of the action at Dennis Hobson’s first ever show in the country’s capital, dubbed Resurrection, in a co-promotion with Danny Maclaren.
The Friday night event at York Hall in Bethnal Green saw a seven-fight card headlined by former Prizefighter winner and unbeaten southpaw – Johnny Coyle.
Here’s a round-up of the evening’s action:
Craig Whyatt (8-3) vs Lukas Leskovic (3-11) Featherweight
The first fight of the evening saw Morden’s Craig Whyatt move to 8-3 as he defeated Croatian Lukas Leskovic. Whyatt was the more proactive fighter throughout the contest and won all four of the allotted rounds. In what was a one-sided contest, Whyatt did show a slight lapse of concentration when he allowed the fight to briefly turn into a brawl in the second round, but the Londoner was rarely troubled by Leskovic, who’s counterpunching approach was ineffective.
George Hennon (3-0) vs Danny Donchev (6-86-1) Welterweight
George Hennon continued his unbeaten start to his boxing career when he secured a 40-36 points victory over Bulgarian journeyman Danny Donchev. Hennon landed a range of precise punches throughout the contest, as dealt with his opponent’s constant holding. The Snodland puncher was clearly superior in ability and was not troubled by Donchev, much to the delight of his vocal supporters in attendance.
Tey Lynn Jones (2-0) vs Scott Hillman (0-6) Middleweight
Tey Lynn Jones was perhaps unlucky not to win his fight against Scott Hillman by way of knockout. Landing often and consistently Jones won all four rounds, but simply could not knock Hillman to the canvas. The Eastbourne fighter showed he has a strong chin as he sucked up the punishment given to him by Jones. Jones, from Essex, will be happy with his performance nonetheless particularly as he used his jab to great effect to set up multiple combinations.
Kirk Garvey (4-0) vs Elvis Dube (7-49-2) Light-heavyweight
Clapham’s Kirk Garvey was no match for Elvis Dube as he won all four rounds in their light heavyweight contest. Garvey’s height was a factor in the fight as he towered above his opponent and kept him at arm’s length throughout. Garvey found his rhythm in the second after a slow start, and did not look in trouble at any point.
Louis Adolphe (5-0) vs James Gorman (8-20-1) Welterweight
Lous Adolphe was impressive in his six round point victory over Northern Irishman James Gorman. Accompanied to the ring by current British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Bradley Skeete, Adolphe was confident and quick in his movements, dipping in and out while controlling the centre of the ring. Gorman, a former Northern Ireland area super lightweight champion, struggled to get near Adolphe, who’s use of the jab was effective when setting up combinations. In fact, Adolphe began every round by landing a jab and that set the tone of the fight from the first bell to the last.
Idris Hill (4-0) vs Youseef Al Hamidi (13-89-3) Light-heavyweight
Idris Hill was on the front foot for the majority of his bout against experienced Syrian puncher Youssef Al Hamidi. The referee scored the contest 60-55 in favour of Hill, whose height advantage allowed him to back Al Hamidi into corners several times in the fight. One right hand in particular, in the fourth round, wobbled Al Hamidi, who was constantly hounded and chased around the ring by Hill.
Johnny Coyle (13-0-1) vs Casey Blair (3-9) Welterweight
The last fight of the night was an eight rounder between Johnny Coyle and Casey Blair, with the former triumphing 79-73. Coyle had a point taken off because he pulled Blair’s head down too many times for the referee’s liking. Aside from that minor hiccup, southpaw Coyle looked a class above Blair. After all he is a former Southern Area super-lightweight champion and has defeated Sam Eggington in the welterweight division in the past. The Essex puncher controlled the fight, and his body shots were particularly effective. As Blair tired towards the end Coyle was able to land cleanly and, in the end, was the clear winner.
