They say time flies when you are having fun, but the last two year’s in boxing terms seem to have motored past in the blink of an eye, given the sport’s resurgence, quality of match-ups and highlight reel knockouts. Speaking of knockouts, here’s a rather memorable one that happened this time two years ago today.
In terms of UK boxing rivalries and grudge matches, super-middleweights Carl Froch and George Groves arguably shared one of the most venomous, bitter and potent of relationships between rival fighters of their era in British boxing.
Their first fight in Novemeber 2013 ended in controversy when referee Howard Foster in the eyes of some, prematurely stopped the contest in the 9th round to hand Froch the TKO victory over his younger foe.
Groves to that point was clearly ahead on the scorecards, and spectacularly dumped Froch onto the seat of his pants in the first round of the bout.
Alas, after months of build-up and further trash talk between the two combatants, their rematch was set for what was one of the biggest boxing matches of the modern era – an epic spectacle that took place outdoors in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on May 31st, 2014.
‘The Cobra’ was to leave little doubt on the result this time however, going out an high note soon after when he announced his retirement from boxing (hat tip to Soccer AM):
