Conor McGregor has definitely made an attempt to hone his boxing skills in recent times but according to Freddie Roach, it didn’t go too well for him in sparring at the Wild Card Gym.
McGregor was a decent amateur boxer back in the day in Ireland, but professional boxing with one of this generation’s most skilled pugilists is a completely different animal.
A straight boxing match with Floyd Mayweather seems very optimistic on McGregor’s part in terms of thinking he could win, with the most likely motivation for such a spectacle on both sides being money, of course.
In an interview with Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub TV, Roach confirmed this intent, quoting Mayweather’s exact words to him as:
“Freddie take that job because you’ll make a lot of money, because the fight’s going to happen.”
The reality is that whatever people’s opinions are on this fight, or circus act to some, there’s no denying that it would drum up some considerable interest with people likely tuning in out of curiosity on the hype more than anything.
Here is the full interview on what Roach really thinks about this match up, as he clears up a few of the rumours that have been going around relating to how McGregor got on with one of his guys in sparring at the Wild Card gym recently:
