The boxing world has being on the global sports news agenda today with the news that professional fighters will now be able to take part in the Olympics this year, something that was previously only reserved for amateur boxing.

The reaction to today’s news for the most part across social media has been fairly negative towards the move, with many saying it is flat out ridiculous:

Pro boxers in the olympics. What are AIBA thinking. Goodbye amateur boxing now as far as I’m concerned. Can’t say I’m a fan of this.

Pro boxers no eligible to box at the Rio olympics is Absolutely ridiculous. There is no point in amateur boxing from now on.

Gutted to hear about it being confirmed pro’s can box in the Olympics. Absolutely ruins amateur boxing that in my opinion. Wrong ??

The coming weeks will be interesting to see who in terms of notable professional boxers take the AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) up on this new change of rule.

One notable former boxing great ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson has come out conclusively against today’s official confirmation that pro fighters can fight at this year’s Olympics (via Reuters):
