A much clamoured for Canelo vs GGG super-fight could be on the rocks as WBO super-welterweight champion Liam Smith has said the Canelo fight has been offered to him.
Smith last defended his WBO title when he stopped ‘Jimmy’ Kilrain Kelly back in December at the Manchester Arena in the UK.
He has been linked with a potential dust up in recent times with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, but that doesn’t look too likely in the immediate future now with Brook being rumoured to be taking on Jessie Vargas in his next outing.
Smith fights this weekend against Montenegro native Predrag Radosevic (30-1-11KO) but he told RingTV this week that should he get through this weekend’s title defence, much bigger fights could await:
“I’ve been offered the Canelo fight but I haven’t been told too much about it.”
All seems to be quite on the Golovkin vs Canelo negotiations front, as things stand over the last week or so, which can be interpreted as a good or bad sign – depending on what way you look at it.
But one thing is for sure, Golovkin’s handlers are definitely looking at other opponents for their man on the chance that the highly anticipated Canelo showdown doesn’t get made.
Speaking yesterday with Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub TV, future Hall of Famer ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley who sparred with ‘GGG’ said Golovkin hits like a heavyweight, while after sharing the ring with Canelo he noted he thought the Mexican felt sharper than Golovkin:
