For those of you that thought Eubank Jr v Blackwell was one-sided or a dangerous fight to make, prepare to see a real mismatch.
In a recent interview with IFL TV, UK promoter Eddie Hearn stated once again that Matchroom are “in negotiations” with Tom Loeffler for a showdown between Chris Eubank Jr and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin, adding that it “could be a stadium fight” ig the logistics work out.
Since his defeat to WBO Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders, Eubank has continued to espouse that he would beat Golovkin and that he is the best in the Middleweight division – whilst simultaneously rejecting offers to fight Saunders for the WBO belt or Daniel Jacobs for the WBA belt (which would make him mandatory for the Golovkin fight he so desperately yearns).
Eubank Jr’s résumé to date reads like a Commonwealth belt challenger at best, not somebody who can beat a World Champion, especially the most devastating puncher in the sport.
For Eddie Hearn, it’s a huge fight and will make all parties a lot of money so there is an obvious motivator there for the Essex-born promoter.
Aside from that though, part of Matchroom’s new deal with the British Middleweight Champion stipulates that they expect Hearn to make the Golovkin fight happen or they will look elsewhere for representation (again) so in a sense his hands are tied.
Whether his hands are tied or not makes no change to the sheer gulf in class between fighting Nick Blackwell for the British Title and fighting a man with 31 straight knockouts for a World Title.
Eubank’s father Chris Eubank Sr aka ‘English’ is concinved his son would beat ‘GGG’:
Having failed in his one fight against a legitimate World-level opponent already in Saunders, it’s hard to expect a different outcome next time as I have seen no real improvement in his game.
In his interview Hearn claims that Eubank Jr would beat any of Golovkin’s previous opponents, I would like to see this put to the test before any Golovkin fight.
At present I see Jr struggling with the likes of Daniel Geale, Curtis Stevens, David Lemieux and Martin Murray but a win against one of these credible opponents would make his claims less laughable and would be a clash with a well-known operator such as Lemieux would give his own hype some credence.
As it stands, he has an average record and a famous surname, enough to milk a decent amount of cash from the casual fans but that famous name will mean nothing when he is faced with the Kazakh Destroyer inside the ring.
It could be that Eubank Jr and his team are fully aware of their limitations and are simply using Golovkin’s name to keep themselves relevant and in the news.
Although it seems foolish to call out Gennady Golovkin and then fight Spike O’Sullivan and Nick Blackwell whilst turning down opportunities to fight for World Titles – if he can beat Golovkin as easily as ‘English’ claims then surely Daniel Jacobs would have been easy work?
It just doesn’t add up.
Time will tell how serious the Eubanks are about their claims to want to fight Triple G, the Middleweight knockout artist is fast running out of willing opponents and with the super-fight against Canelo looking less and less likely to happen this year, Eubank Jr may find out sooner rather than later just how good Gennady Golovkin is.
