A fight that has been wanted by boxing fans for quite some time is set to finally become a reality this year.
Earlier this week we spoke to Kovalev’s promoter Kathy Duva who confirmed to us that provided both men win their upcoming fights, that they will indeed face off on November 19th.
However, more news has now emerged since then in that Dan Rafael of ESPN has reported that Kovalev’s promoter Duva has put in an application for the fight to take place at Las Vegas’ newly built T-Mobile Arena.
It is expected that both fighters should win their upcoming bouts, although Ward who has a date pencilled this summer has yet to secure an opponent.
For many the fight will represent a 50-50 affair with the two possessing different styles, but equally effective to this point in their careers.
The likes of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach favors Kovalev to win a fight with Ward, as does trainer Robert Garcia and boxing great James Toney.
I’m not sure at this point however.
I think it is also important to point out that Kovalev has never faced anyone with the technical boxing ability of Andre Ward.
From a power perspective, Kovalev obviously has the advantage, along with being a good boxer too mind you.
Bbut I think it’s a genuine toss up, the type of fight that boxing needs as a sport, a big fight where it could genuinely go either way.
Here’s an interesting build-up video ahead of a fight that the world of boxing eagerly awaits (hat tip ICMedia):
