Light-Heavyweight kingpin Sergey Kovalev returns to action this coming Monday on July 11th against Issac Chilemba knowing that if he wins, a fight with American boxing maestro Andre Ward awaits (should Ward also win his next fight).
Ahead of the Chilemba fight, Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports has released a really heart wrenching documentary that charts the unfortunate night that a professional fighter lost his life after sharing the ring with Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev.
Not many know about the story, but it dates back to 2011 when Kovalev shared the ring with his fellow Russian countryman Roman Simakov at the DIVS in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
What ensued was to be a tragic outcome, after a one sided fight when ultimately Kovalev stopped Simakov inside the distance.
Simakov was then taken out of the arena on a stretcher where he was rushed to hospital and then fell into a coma and sadly, died three days later.
Kovalev has not talked much about the night until now, as this coming Monday against Issac Chilemba will mark the first time he has fought in Russia since that night.
The folks at Yahoo Sports have put together a short documentary ahead of Kovalev’s pugilistic return to Russia, where there is clearly a lot of heartache on both sides of everyone affected still to this day:
