Sergey Kovalev returns to the ring this coming Monday against Issac Chilemba knowing a win puts him directly in the path of Andre Ward later this year.
Ward must first get past his next fight against Alexander Brand next month and come through healthy for the highly anticipated showdown on November 19th with Sergey Kovalev to finally come to fruition.
It’s a fight that has got the boxing world talking since it was first mooted last year and then since it emerged that a contract was in place for the fight earlier this year.
It’s being simmering away nicely since, in terms of debate among fight fans online and one man who knows a thing or two about boxing and indeed calling big fights – is Gennady Golovkin’s head trainer Abel Sanchez.
Speaking to Dontae’s Boxing Nation Sanchez said he’s picking Kovalev in the fight:
“He stops him just because it gets so difficult that the fight is stopped somehow.”
He added:
“Kovalev is an elite fighter like Andre is, but Andre is a little rusty right now.”
In many ways it’s an intriguing clash of styles, with the power advantage going to Kovalev but in my opinion, the boxing skills edge going to Ward.
Don’t get me wrong, Kovaelv is an excellent technical boxer himself and showed as much in his display against Bernard Hopkins, but I just don’t think he’s on the same level as Ward for out and out skill.
However, Abel Sanchez makes a good point above and there will be questions surrounding how ready Andre really is for such a stern test.
If there’s ever a genuine 50/50 fight that could go either way, it’s this one.
