Pound for pound rated Guillermo Rigondeaux returns to the ring this weekend in Wales when he takes on James Dickens at the Ice Arena in Cardiff Saturday night.
The Cuban boxing great was recently elevated to WBA ‘Super’ super-bantamweight champion, following the decision of previous belt holder Carl Frampton to vacate the belt and instead move up to challenge featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.
In many ways over the years Rigondeaux has been the man left out in the cold by both the super-bantamweight and featherweight divisions, with fights against the division’s best proving extremely hard to come by.
‘Rigo’ spoke of his respect for Dickens for taking the fight today in Wales, in a time where he has little respect for the rest of the division.
Speaking to Kugan Cassius of IFL TV Rigondeaux said:
“You know they speak about all the other 122 pounders, they’re all a bunch of cowards. This guy had the guts to actually get in the ring with me and I appreciate it greatly because it gives me a chance to come here and give the fans what they want to see.”
He added:
“Lets put aside Dickens that had the real balls to come and fight me. All the rest of the champions don’t deserve to hold the belt, because they are all a bunch of scaredy cats and cowards, and they shouldn’t be calling themselves champions.”
His frustration is understandable with respect, as he’s done everything possible in recent years trying to get the big names into the ring, to no avail.
His fight this weekend will be televised live on BoxNation.
