Bermane Stiverne and Joseph Parker appeared to be the leading candidates for IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s next fight, but a new name has now also been thrown into the mix.
Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev (23-1-12KO) last fought in May when he won a split decision points victory over the UK’s Dereck Chisora in Germany.
It now appears that he is the latest to be linked with the UK’s Anthony Joshua for later in the year, after Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports that he had:
“Also discussed the possibility of Pulev with Kalle Sauerland (Pulev’s promoter).”
Pulev would certainly be a solid test for Joshua at this stage of his career, although with Pulev having primarily campaigned in Germany throughout his professional tenure to date, he might not be the number one choice from a commercial standpoint with Joshua mainly shown on UK (Sky) and US (Showtime) TV at the moment.
Then again though, it could be part of the idea of turning Joshua into a global brand in boxing as Hearn has suggested in the past.
From a boxing perspective, I like the fight at this stage of Joshua’s career. Pulev is no mug skills-wise and has only ever lost to Wladimir Klitschko.
It is expected that an announcement on Joshua’s next fight opponent will be made over the coming weeks at some point – with Joshua himself recently saying he wants a serious contender next.
