Rigondeaux vs Lomachenko would arguably be the biggest match-up of pure skill in a global boxing ring for decades. Two ultra-talented sweet science operators. An unquestionable classic, if it were to come off.
But there’s work to be done first this week for the man they call ‘Rigo’ who at the moment thinks very little of his fellow super-bantamweight champions.
The much avoided Cuban boxing great is in the UK this week and puts his WBA (Super) super-bantamweight title on the line against James Dickens at the Ice Arena in Cardiff on Saturday.
Dickens deserves huge credit for stepping up to the plate to take on Rigondeaux in a time where very few would.
Speaking to Steve Lillis of BoxNation this week Rigondeaux said if he were to get past this Saturday’s challenge that a fight with WBO super-featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko appeals to him if the two meet in the middle of their respective weight classes, namely near the super-bantamweight limit:
“He took off to 130lbs. I mean, it could be done. Lets do a catchweight. 124lbs. I’m ready to meet him but he’s taking off, he’s scared – he’s going into other divisions. Let them know about the best two boxers, two-time Gold medallists. That would be a great fight.”
Given both the extensive amateur credentials and now professional achievements of both men in boxing, it’s hard to think of a fight possible to make in the sport that would be of such an incredibly high skill level.
From a purist boxing perspective, the bout would have the makings of an instant classic, however it is questionable as to whether or not Lomachenko would accept a catchweight fight as ‘Rigo’ suggests they should have.
Also with the fact Bob Arum of Top Rank was not too fond of Rigondeaux’s fight style in the past when he promoted him, it could make things difficult in terms of getting a fight made and a TV deal agreed, given the fact Arum currently promotes Lomachenko at the moment.
To increase his stock once more, Rigondeaux will have to look impressive this weekend in the UK if he wants to land those big fights he so desperately crave, but more importantly – deserves.
