Rigondeaux breaks Dickens jaw in freak punch that causes early night in Cardiff.
The first round was a quiet affair, as it looked like Rigondeaux was taking a look at his Liverpool foe – trying to work him out.
The second was a similar type of three minutes, although Dickens did have some decent moments himself and was committing to his shots to his credit.
Rigondeaux landed one significant left hand over the top however, right on the jaw of Dickens, which unfortunately at the end of the round was found to have broken the jaw of the Englishman, who could not continue.
The fight was called off by Dickens’ team due to the injury, giving Rigondeaux an anti-climax early win to leave him holding onto his WBA (Super) super-bantamweight championship.
In truth, it was the right decision to pull Dickens out with such a severe injury which would only have gotten worst as the fight went on, particularly against such an accurate and powerful puncher as Rigondeaux.
After the fight promoter Frank Warren said that Rigondeaux would likely be back on the UK shores again on September 17th, although ‘Rigo’ has also been linked with a mouth watering matchup with Vasyl Lomachenko.
A frustrating night for the talented Cuban tonight. Lets hope we see him back out again soon.
