Deontay Wilder stayed perfect in Birmingham, Alabama and ran his record to 37-0 but it came at a price; Wilder not only broke his hand but also tore a muscle in his right bicep during the scrap.
This occurred around the fourth round. Wilder was pretty much in control throughout the entire fight and it showed, taunting Arreola at times, fulfilling his pre-fight prediction of dishing out punishment.
Arreola (36-5-1, 2 No Contests) was game and proved to be a tough customer, but being tough only gets you so far in the sport of boxing. It appeared that Wilder would end the night in the fourth as he hurt and dropped Arreola.
Arreola was hurt very bad and when asked how he survived he had this to say:
“Let’s be honest, man. It takes a real fighter to be in the ring with someone like him. He’s a big man. We’re in the heavyweight division, man, this is the hurt business. You have to know how to deal with adversity. I get punched, I’m going to get back up.”
Wilder got the win but some of the same issues that have plagued him in the past showed up, including wide punches and consistently being forced to the ropes.
It will be interesting to see how these things affect him in future fights. When asked about some of the potential big fights that could be made Wilder said:
“Of course I want the Furys. Of course I want the Joshuas. The question is do they want me?” Whichever one of those fights is made next will definitely be a fight that fans want.”
