Boxers and MMA fighters are once again linked with a potential showdown, but is this just another PR exercise?
Earlier this year talks of boxing great Floyd Mayweather fighting UFC star Conor McGregor in a boxing match were rampant, but now the opposite end of the shoe appears to frequenting the combat sports rumour mill – via a potential MMA bout involving McGregor and boxer Amir Khan.
Khan, who was devastatingly knocked out by Canelo Alvarez last May in a middleweight boxing bout has said to Flocombat:
“McGregor is a massive name in MMA, and I’m a big name in boxing, so globally, I think it would be a massive fight.”
The cynical among us will look back to earlier in the year’s speculation about Mayweather and McGregor as something similar to this, a PR move for both guys to get publicity of each other’s backs and ultimately having no intention of facing one another.
Then again though, some may view these comments as genuine from Khan given the one sided nature of his last loss to Canelo and look to a potential McGregor MMA fight as a freak show and one last pay day cash grab before he retires all together.
The common dominator in these boxing vs UFC hype stories this year seems to be Conor McGregor who at present is concentrating solely MMA with his upcoming rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 202, although a boxer he sparred with earlier this year did release full footage recently of McGregor in the boxing gym.
