GGG Boxing Promoter Details Why Canelo Talks Failed

GGG boxing promoter Tom Loeffler is now focusing on his charge’s next fight against Kell Brook on September 10th in London, but speaking this week in the UK he also went through why the much clamoured for Canelo fight isn’t happening just yet.

Many will recall back in May after Canelo’s dynamite knockout of Amir Khan, that Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions said after the fight that he would be getting on the phone to GGG’s promoter (Tom Loeffler) in a bid to try to make the fight the very next morning.

Apparently the phone call happened, but not apparently with that much urgency to make the fight this year – according to Tom Loeffler.

Speaking to Fight Hype, CEO of K2 Promotions Tom Loeffler said:

“Oscar called the next day and I had spoke with Eric Gomez (Golden Boy senior vice-president) and they really wanted to plan for this fight for next year. Canelo moved down to 154lbs he’s going to fight Liam Smith now. If it was up to our side I think it’s pretty clear that Gennady would have taken the fight as soon as possible.

He continued:

“But what can you do? We’ll just continue to build Gennady, this fight here is massive, the way it’s sold out at the O2 Arena. The international attention that this fight has gotten, if everything goes the right way in September and a week later Canelo fights, if both guys keep winning it just makes the fight that much bigger for next year.”

Should both men win their upcoming fights like they are expected to do with the bookmakers at least, strong calls for this mega fight will inevitably come roaring once again in what seems like an inevitable collision one day between these two men.
