Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders in a WBO middleweight title fight would be an intriguing match up of styles and skills. In many ways, the classical puncher vs boxer matchup.
The pair have been linked together for a potential fight in the past, but it seems now more than ever that it could very well become a reality.
Canelo is scheduled to face the UK’s WBO junior-middleweight champion Liam Smith in Texas next month and a fight with fellow promotional stablemate, Billy Joe Saunders, could in theory be not that hard to make after that.
Mitch Abramson of RingTV has reported that Vice-President of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez, has said that talks are ongoing to get Saunders on the undercard of the upcoming Canelo-Smith show and that as part of a potential deal, terms could also include Canelo then having to face Saunders this coming December (if both men are victorious next month).
It’s a fight that would tick a lot of boxes for fans in different geographies for sure, whether it be Mexican, UK or US boxing fans.
Canelo stepping up to the full middleweight limit to challenge for the WBO title would certainly generate interest.
Hypothetically speaking, the winner of such a bout in December would be in an excellent position to then secure even bigger fights in 2017 – namely against a certain Gennady Golovkin.
This could be the start of a great time for the middleweight division if the the best 160lbs fighters fight each other – lets hope it happens.
