Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn suggests IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua could potentially feature on a gigantic night of heavyweight boxing at the Millennium Stadium in Wales.
It might not be a bad idea, Eddie Hearn.
The national stadium of Wales, also named the Principality Stadium, can hold up to 80,000 spectators and is capable of holding events year round under any weather conditions due to it’s ability to close a retractable roof.
The last time such a large event happened in boxing at a stadium was in the UK when Carl Froch and George Groves’ 2014 rematch incredibly sold 80,000 tickets at Wembley Stadium in London.
Speaking to Kugas Cassius of IFL TV, promoter Eddie Hearn spoke of another stadium idea for this coming November:
“What about AJ against Pulev or Stiverne, Price against Parker and Chisora against Whyte? A heavyweight grand slam? What about that in one night? What about doing it at the Millennium Stadium or something like that?”
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet as regards opponent or venue, but a date of November 26th has been mooted as when IBF champion Joshua’s next fight takes place.
While there is no denying Joshua’s star power in the UK and world boxing, a hefty figure of at least 60,000 tickets was mentioned by Hearn as the minimum they would need to sell to pull such an event off.
If Joshua regularly sells out the O2 Arena (nearly 20,000 capacity) in under ten minutes for his fights, I think it would be reasonable to assume that they could sell 60,000 tickets for a Joshua stadium show in Wales.
Why not?
The Froch vs Groves rematch did so well for it’s time due to the controversial nature of their first fight, that left the public absolutely desperate to see the rematch.
Joshua is a bit of different animal in his own right mind you, given the fact he is such a popular heavyweight, which sells a lot in it’s own regard.
There would be worst bets that Hearn could make, particularly if he packed the card with two other heavyweight fights like he has suggested.
