The official Canelo v Smith preview show has been released by HBO and Golden Boy Promotions ahead of the WBO junior-middleweight title showdown in Texas next month.
After watching the Canelo v Smith preview show from start to finish, there were a couple of key learning points to be taken away, in my humble opinion.
Firstly, it gave a much needed and interesting behind the scenes insight into champion Liam Smith, who may not have been that well known to fans in the States particularly.
Make no mistake, he is not to be underestimated by Canelo and his dedication to his craft is apparent in the latest build-up show, where he is under the watchful eye of Ring Magazine trainer of the year Joe Gallagher.
An interesting part in the documentary I thought was when it went through Smith’s background growing up and some insight into his family, who of course are the famed Smith fighting family in the UK, producing four top class professional boxing brothers from the same household.
Even as an Irishman and fellow European myself, I wasn’t totally familiar with a lot of this back story and in particular, how extremely close Liam is with his brother Callum, in terms of their training together on a day to day basis.
Callum Smith is widely regarded as a future super-middleweight champion of the world. Perhaps one of the most concussive pound for pound punchers to come out of England in recent memory, with technical boxing ability and buckets of drive to consistently improve.
On a daily basis both he and Liam push each other in the gym, side by side. Liam definitely won’t be overwhelmed by Canelo’s power I don’t believe as a result. Callum Smith punches just as hard as Canelo – if not harder.
Canelo Alvarez in the segment was shown to be taking the Liam Smith challenge very seriously for his part, which was good to see. They (his team) know how hungry Smith will be to get the win.
Anyway, enough of my guff. Here’s the full Canelo v Smith Preview Show:
