Ahead of his WBO super-welterweight showdown with Liverpool’s Liam Smith, we take a look back at the last time the Mexican boxing star fought a boxer from the UK – with the Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan full fight video below.
If that fight is anything to go by, it could mean a painful night for Smith. However it’s not. Not by a long way.
Last time out back in May of this year, Canelo Alvarez stepped into the ring with Bolton’s Amir Khan in a middleweight bout that saw Khan jump up an entire two weight divisions for the match in Las Vegas.
A brave, courageous move by Khan, no doubt, but it turned out to be a devastatingly incorrect decision in the end.
To his credit early on, Khan was out-boxed Canelo via superior speed of foot and hand and lateral movement. But it wasn’t too last long.
Head movement was not something Khan was employing to accompany his footwork and as the early rounds passed by, Canelo began stalking his English counterpart, patiently waiting for the right moment to time him onto that one big punch that so many of Khan’s fans had feared before the bout.
This nuclear missile-style blow was to find a home for Khan’s chin in round six, one of the best right hands of 2016 and knockout of the year contender.
The move up in weight proved too much for Khan on the night, plain and simple, a man who had previously been put down at much lighter weight classes in his professional career.
Tonight though, Canelo Alvarez faces a much stiffer foe when he takes on Liam Smith in Texas, a natural junior-middleweight who will carry similar strength, size and punch resistance to Canelo, with the edge perhaps in punching power and skill going to the Mexican.
Below is what happened the last time Canelo got in the ring against a Brit. Enjoy the Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan full fight video via the HBO YouTube channel (credit):
