Floyd Mayweather speaks on what he can do for fighters as a promoter and how boxers deserve more.
Love him or hate him, you can’t take away what Floyd Mayweather achieved in a boxing ring.
Pound for pound the best boxer in the world of his generation, a Rocky Marciano equalling fight record of 49-0 (26KO), a five-weight division world champion with names beaten on his resume such as Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Arturo Gatti, Shane Mosley, Juan Luis Castillo, Juan Manuel Marquez, Canelo Alvarez, Zab Judah, Diego Corrales and many more.
So when Floyd Mayweather speaks on the treatment of fighters, having competed at all levels in boxing both amateur and professional boxing, he is more than qualified to be fair to him.
Since his last fight against Andre Berto speculation has been rampant that we’ll see ‘Money’ back in the ring at least one more time, in a bid to go for that all elusive 50-0 record.
But he’s been insistent in recent times that it won’t be happening and that he is content in retirement and being a promoter, building his Mayweather Promotions company and TMT (The Money Team) brand around the world.
Recently he was at the 2016 Rio Olympics scouting out talent and has been linked with signing US Olympian Shakur Stevenson and even in recent days has also been linked with signing Irish Olympian Michael Conlan.
But I can’t help but think we’ll see Mayweather back in a professional boxing ring at least one more time. Against who though is anyone’s guess.
A spectacle fight with UFC star Conor McGregor although it appeared like a cynical PR move by both men earlier this year when the rumours flew around on social media, could be in fact the type of final hurrah Mayweather looks to have before calling it quits in the fight game as an active fighter, in that it would carry little risk but still a massive payday return.
Time will tell.
