A respected boxing trainer in the UK believes that if anyone at middleweight is to beat division kingpin Gennady Golovkin, that it will be current WBO titlist Billy Joe Saunders.
Golovkin fought earlier this month against the UK’s Kell Brook at London’s 02 Arena and won via a 5th round stoppage when Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel to call the fight off.
It was revealed the next day that Brook had suffered a broken orbital bone.
Speculation instantly turned as to who Golovkin will take on next, with leading calls for the much wanted Canelo Alvarez fight from fans being widespread since.
However, it is understood that the Golovkin-Canelo fight is being looked at for next September (2017) so ‘GGG’ will need at the very least one opponent between then and now, if not two.
Billy Joe Saunders has been vocal in his want of the fight in recent weeks and his trainer Jimmy Tibbs’ son Mark Tibbs, who is also a respected trainer within the boxing business, believes he can beat Golovkin.
Speaking to James Helder of IFL TV – Mark Tibbs said:
“When I saw how Kell Brook looked against Golovkin, and I just imagined Billy Joe against Golovkin and you know they say that punchers lose a bit of timing over night, so I think if anyone is going to do Golovkin – Billy Joe Saunders will do it.”
Golovkin also has a mandatory obligation at the moment from the WBA to take on Danny ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs but a world title unification with Saunders might be able to take precedence over this in the short-term.
Having recently boxed in the UK and with a potential fight with Saunders being a world title unification, one would imagine interest for a possible match up and it’s ability to sell in the UK would likely be quite positive.
