We caught up with Sergey Kovalev promoter and Main Events CEO Kathy Duva this week to have a brief chat ahead of the biggest fight of her charge’s professional career to date, when he faces American boxing maestro Andre Ward on November 19th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It’s long to go now until arguably the biggest fight of the 2016 boxing calendar, certainly the most credible from a coming together of two pound for pound star’s perspective.
It’s not often in boxing where you get a chance to see two of genuinely the best fighters in a division compete against each other, let alone two of a sport’s best pound for pound athletes (regardless of weight category).
A woman who knows one of the combatants in the fight better than most, Kathy Duva, spoke to us on where her fighter Sergey Kovalev is mentally, his ability to win and the significance of this pay per view event worldwide.
Do you think Sergey has the power to hurt Andre Ward and ultimately stop him inside the distance?
“He most certainly does. He also has the ability to outbox him for 12 rounds, as Sergey demonstrated with his performance against Bernard Hopkins. Sergey’s versatility is one of the things that makes this fight so interesting.”
With the Chilemba fight perhaps not been Sergey’s best performance last time out, how is his motivation at the moment ahead of such a massive showdown with Andre Ward?
“The last time I saw him like this, Sergey was preparing to fight Bernard Hopkins. He is supremely motivated.”
Do you believe the winner of this fight deserves to be called the pound for pound best boxer on Earth?”
“Yes, I do. “The Ring’s” records demonstrate that the opportunity for two top 5 P4P fighters to face each other in their prime—and both undefeated, no less—is a rare occurrence. On the rare occasions when it has happened, the winner took over the #1 spot. The winner of this fight will have earned the right to be called #1.”
