The tragic news was confirmed in the early hours of this morning that Mike Towell, a Dundee boxer from Scotland has sadly passed away following a bout in Glasgow during the week.
The 25 year old was taken immediately to hospital last Thursday following a 5th round stoppage defeat by welterweight Dale Evans at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland.
The news was confirmed from an official source in the early hours of this morning on Twitter via Mike’s boxing club St.Andrew’s S.C.
During the contest on Thursday Towell was knocked down in the first round, however he got up to continue the fight until the 5th round when the referee stopped the fight shortly after he was knocked down a second time.
Following been taken to hospital, it was discovered that Mike had suffered bleeding and swelling to the brain following the welterweight title bout.
It has been reported that Towell passed away with his family alongside him in hospital.
His partner Chole Ross said that Mike “fought to the very end” and that she was “absolutely heartbroken” following the tragic news of his passing.
The boxing community has been rocked this morning by the news with many prominent figures in the game expressing their sadness and paying respect to the brave Towell:
