A Golovkin vs Jacobs fight expected for December of this year appears to have ran into some issues.
Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs has been a mandatory contender for the world’s leading middleweight Gennady Golovkin for some time now.
Dan Rafael of ESPN has reported that the fight is running into issues surrounding the purse split however, with Rafael saying the Jacobs camp are at present looking for a 60-40 deal in favour of Golovkin.
The two teams have until next Wed (October 12th) to come to an agreement – otherwise the fight will be put out to purse bids.
According to Rafael’s report, there are also talks of Jacobs wanting to take an interim fight in the meantime between a Golovkin fight, but Golovkin is keen to get the mandatory out of the way as soon as possible.
The hold up of this fight getting made in the grand scheme of things is not a help to ultimately getting the Golovkin vs Canelo fight done, either.
The longer this goes on and gets dragged out, the further everything keeps getting put back.
With the current state of boxing in New York completely up in the air at the moment due to not only the recent hike in insurance rates for combat sports events in the State, but now also the complete lack of availability of any insurance available for boxing events in New York, it is likely this (GGG vs Jacobs) will be a Vegas or California fight when it does happen.
A tentative date of December 10th on HBO has been mooted for this fight, after a reported surplus in the HBO boxing budget was made recently to allow one more big fight on the network before the year is out.
It’s an excellent fight too, Golovkin vs Jacobs, and with Jacobs been so adamant in the past that he wanted to fight – surely both parties can come to a deal sooner rather than later.
Golovkin last fought in September when he stopped Kell Brook in the 5th round in London’s 02 Arena. Jacobs last competed in September also when he stopped also Sergio Mora inside the distance.
