Despite a mediocre performance on pay per view the recent Liam Smith vs Canelo gate did handily enough on the night in Texas.
Promoters of the event Golden Boy Promotions put out a figure recently that the pay per view event last month did 300,000 buys on HBO pay per view.
Some observers suggested that the real number might be a little below this and that the above might represent a rounded up figure.
Dan Rafael of ESPN has independently now reported on what the figures were at the live gate on the night at the AT&T stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium) were.
The official attendance on the night that is public knowledge was 51,240.
But Rafael has said that over 5000 of these were comps given away with the real paid number of tickets laying closer to the 46,000 mark.
He reported that the live gate collected on the night was $5,037,900. Not a bad haul on the gate it must be said. But also not spectacular for a star of Alvarez’ level.
Despite the criticism of the fight leading up to the event the attendance figures overall show that Canelo has significant star power when bringing out his Mexican fan base to a live event.
The pay per view numbers were perhaps not the best though. Should a fight with Canelo and Golovkin get done next year expect to see those numbers shoot up.
At present Canelo Alvarez is ruled out of action until 2017 through injury.
