Bernard Hopkins last match up being tipped for December and against an opponent who could enjoy an almost 25 year youth advantage.
Recently Bernard Hopkins said his last match up in the squared circle was to come before 2016 is out. Most likely in December.
A report by Michael Woods from NY Fights suggests this was an accurate statement from Hopkins. Woods is now linking a potential fight for Hopkins with a boxer by the name of Joe Smith on December 17th.
Not many outside of boxing may be familiar with New York’s Smith but make no mistake, he is more than a credible opponent – considering Hopkins turns 52 next January and is still incredibly competing professionally in boxing.
Not just competing either. In typical Hopkins fashion he’ll want to win in convincing fashion against a live dog who will challenge him.
Smith is a dangerous, sizeable, big hitting (22-1-18KO) light-heavyweight from Long Island who’s only defeat in a professional ring came back in 2010 against Eddie Caminero.
At 27 years he would enjoy an almost 25 year age advantage on Hopkins. Quite extraordinary when you think about it.
But that’s something Hopkins has dealt with before. Although the question will arise once again when will father time catch up with this rare athlete?
Ever the shrewd operator though if it is to be Smith as his final fight in the ring, Hopkins will no doubt have already spotted many weaknesses he can exploit before even signing the contract.
Whoever the Bernard Hopkins last match in the ring is against you can bet your bottom dollar that fans will turn out in their droves regardless to see him do what he does best one final time.
Whenever I think of Bernard Hopkins for some reason I always think of Frank Sinatra’s hit song ‘I Did It My Way’. Bernard Hopkins is a man who certainly did things his way.
Proved right in doing so too. Time and time again.
