Ex Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer Back In Boxing

Richard Schaefer back in business and looks set to promote an exciting American boxing card to close out 2016 as his first event for his new company.

Many will remember the Swiss man as the former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

He oversaw the day to day operations for the company for a number of years and is widely credited as being the man behind the scenes who was responsible for promoting some of the biggest boxing events in the US over the last decade.

Many of Floyd Mayweather’s big pay per view bonanzas were actually promoted by Golden Boy and Schaefer behind the scenes developed a close working relationship with Mayweather and his adviser Al Haymon.

His return to boxing had been mooted earlier this year here following his departure from his previous role at Golden Boy in 2014, but that required a cooling off period were a non compete clause left him unable to work in boxing for a period of time.

Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya (founder of Golden Boy) worked closely at Golden Boy Promotions in the past.

Here with Fight Network Schaefer spoke of how he agreed to send Oscar to rehab once during his troubled times for his friend:

By all accounts Schaefer has been keeping busy in the meantime with outside business ventures, but the important thing here for boxing fans is that a bloody good promoter is back in action.

The US boxing market has had an up and down year in 2016 if the truth be told, with the British boxing industry experiencing a bit of a boom across the water.

With the likes of Schaefer back on the scene in American boxing 2017 could certainly get a bit more interesting in the US.

His first event as reported by journalist Lance Pugmire of the LA Times will see his Ringstar Sports company promote the upcoming Abner Mares vs Jesus Andres Cuellar and Jermall Charlo vs Julian Williams double world title event.

It will take place  on December 10th at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.

December 10th is shaping up up to be a rather busy night for boxing all around the world as it happens, with many other big fights being looked at for that date currently.

Good to see Richard Schaefer back overall. Competition is only a good thing and can only help US boxing.
