The Miguel Cotto vs James Kirkland fight was initially suspected to be delayed due to an injury. However it has now been confirmed that it’s off, at least for the near future.
The Miguel Cotto vs James Kirkland fight was a fun one on paper to look forward to style-wise but according to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the bout is now off.
The fight had been scheduled for February 25th.
The injury is suspected to be to Kirkland with rumors circulating that he suffered a cut during preparation for the fight.
The fight did come in for a bit of criticism from some fans for being a pay per view event on HBO in the first place, it must be said.
Hopefully the injury is not too severe for Kirkland and they can get the fight on again later this year, on whatever platform it lands on.
Cotto has not fought since November 2015 when he suffered a unanimous points defeat at the hands of Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.
Kirkland also hasn’t boxed since 2015 since losing to Canelo.
A fight I’d personally love to see, although it might be unlikely, would be a fight between Cotto and Irish Andy Lee.
It was mooted in the past but for one reason or other never came to fruition.
Both men would draw well in New York among Irish and Puerto Rican fans and the clash of styles would most definitely deliver.
